Sorry about not blogging lately. We had a week of schoolies and then oz quest and then a base wedding that we were all helping out with, so its safe to say that I am completely exhausted right now.
I'll start with Schoolies. This is a yearly event for graduating seniors. It is basically spring break ten times over. Its a full two weeks of graduates drinking from the time they wake up in the morning until they pass out. Their are many organizations that work with the schoolies to make sure they are safe, but still allow them to have fun. We are able to work with one of the organizations that has a great reputation with the schoolies. Our shift starts at 5pm and goes until 4am. We stay up with them, call ambulances if needed. And when we are around, we are able to keep an eye on how much they are drinking and drugs dont get passed around as much when we are there. Its crazy how much these kids LOVE these volunteers. They want you around, and they want to hear about what you believe and they ask you questions. We deal with all kinds of situations; suicide ideation, alchohol incidents, epileptic attacks. Problems that come with young people who don't know how to handle alchohol. And then at the end of the week you give them your facebook, talk to them about their future, invite them to your church. Its awesome.
Next we had oz quest. Three days that challenge you spiritually emotionally and physically. It is outreach training, and the whole purpose is to get you to that point that you get to about half way through outreach, and see how you deal with it. You work as a team for three days, and we split up the students into their outreach teams, so us leaders can see how they work together, what attitude problems we might be facing, and just to bond. The first day is physical. We hiked for ten hours in the rain, up mountains, with very little food and a time limit on everything you do. The second day is emotional/mental. There are a lot of team building activities on this day. Some of the challenges that come along with these activities are you can't talk, or see, or you have to trust someone else to do something for you.
Then came the wedding. Andy has been a wonderful staff member to the Gold Coast base, and a great friend. AJ was a student on the February 2010 school and she is such a great spirit. I love how much they are in love and it was an honor to be apart of their wedding. I welcome their love onto this base, and I can't wait to see it expand. Please be praying for them during this early wedding stage. They are leading the next school coming up and I know they are going to do a great job as long as they keep God the focus :) Congrats Mr. and Mrs. Scalas
